search: "trumpington bible"

UPDATE: If you are looking for "Trumpington Bible", please look at the three comments to this post by ernest green, patrick of bath and anonymous, and all will be revealed!

UPDATE 2: for an erudite discussion of the Trumpington Bible, click here to go to Bishop's Blog, the blog of Dr David Thomson, Bishop of Huntingdon.

This blog has had a lot of hits recently, which is never something to complain about, but I regret that many readers find themselves unsatisfied. Since yesterday, I've had a huge amount of people being led to my blog after googling the terms "Trumpington Bible". I've spoken about a General Election campaign in Trumpington, a village to the south-east of Cambridge, and list the Bible on the sidebar as one of my favourite books. But I've never mentioned the two words together and - strangely, given the number of hits googling the terms - Google can't find any document mentioning the two words side by side.

I wonder what's going on, what news is breaking? Can anybody enlighten us?

  1. Bishop Tom Butler told about the Trumpington Bible on Thought for the Day (Radio4) yesterday. Apparently it's in the Lambeth Palace Library exhibition, and the words 'Eli, eli' are crossed out and replaced by the words 'Trumpington, Trumpington.'

  2. That's what I searched for, and you have saved me a fruitless search if nothing else. It was a funny anecdote in which Tom Butler related how Trumpington had borrowed a bible from Ely to satisfy some inspection, but on reading it the Vicar came across the words (in hebrew) My God Why Hast Though Foresaken Me, which is "eli eli lama sabachthani", not really understanding hebrew, the vicar thought the reference might give the game away about the loan and replaced Eli Eli with "Trumpington Trumpington"!

  3. On the radio programme Thought for the Day the story was told of the vicar of Trumpington in the Tudor period (I think) who mistakenly thought the words Eli, Eli referred to Ely and so replaced them with Trumpington, Trumpington lama sabancthani. Apparently this bible is included in the exhibition at Lambeth Palace at the moment

  5. I have been telling all of my friends this story, and trying very hard to verify it on the internet to no avail. I just called Lambeth Palace Library and they told me that the Trumpington Bible is in fact NOT part of the summer exhibition. In fact, they don't even know for sure where it is!
